Men in second, women tied for fourth after first day of A-10s

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The women's swimming and diving team is tied for fourth place with Fordham's swimmers and the men's team sits in second after the first day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y. on Wednesday evening.

In the meet's first event, the Brown and White garnered fifth-place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.77) behind freshman Kathryne Valentine and seniors Anneli Johnson, Meghan King and Taryn Ahern.

In the day's final event, sophomore Allison Smith, freshman Natalya Ghostlaw, King and Ahern touched for fourth place with a time of 7:39.45 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

After day one of the Atlantic 10 Championships, the University of Richmond women sit atop the field with 80 points. Xavier and Duquesne are tied for second place (66 points). St. Bonaventure and Fordham are deadlocked at fourth with 58 points and La Salle and Massachusetts both sit at sixth place with 50 points. George Washington and Rhode Island's teams are tied for the eighth spot (40), while St. Louis holds the bottom spot with 28 points.

In men's action, the Bonnies clinched the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay. Seniors Roman Margulis and Scott Jordan, freshman David Kundzik, and junior Pat Henahan bolted off the blocks to capture gold in 1:32.04.
 

 

The men's swimmers also had an impressive showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Margulis, Jordan, Kundzik and Henahan grabbed bronze with a time of 6:47.86.

In diving action, senior CJ Maurer recorded 485.10 points en route to a fourth-place finish in the one-meter dive.

At the end of the day's competition, the Massachusetts Minutemen took first honors with 135 points, beating out St. Bonaventure's swimming and diving team (104). Fordham rounded out the top three with 85 points, while Xavier and Duquesne hold the fourth and fifth spots with 68 and 66 points respectively. Sixth place is occupied by Rhode Island (63), while La Salle University sits in seventh (62). George Washington and St. Louis shared the day's bottom spot with 40 points apiece.

Both the men and women's teams will return to the Flickinger Center tomorrow for day two of the competition. Preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m. and finals are slated for 6:30 p.m. Live coverage of Thursday's action can be accessed on the Atlantic 10's website.
