A 1994 St. Bonaventure graduate and former standout swimmer in the Atlantic 10 Conference, head coach Lance Brennan has emerged as one of the conference's top coaches. Year in and year out, Brennan's teams challenge for the Atlantic 10 title and also achieve in the classroom. Over his eight seasons at his alma mater, Brennan has guided his teams to six second place and one third place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. He has coached 10 individual A-10 champions and 22 All-Conference swimmers. Brennan was named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2001.
Brennan directed last year's club to a fifth place finish at the conference championships. Under his guidance, junior Anneli Johnson picked up a bronze medal in the 200-breast as well as a 14th place overall finish during the four-day championship meet. In the 2005-06 season, Brennan guided the Bonnies to a second place finish at the A-10 Championship. Taryn Ahern and Stephanie Belke both won individual gold medals as the Bonnies made a strong charge on the final night to hold on to their runner-up spot. Brennan's teams also are consistent academic achievers. The Bonnies have been recognized as an Academic All-America team by the College Swimming Coaches of America for the sixth straight semester. In the spring 2006 semester, 10 Bonnies earned spots on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who earn at least a 3.5 GPA in a semester. The academic succes for the Bonnies continued this past season. Senior Emily Grobmyer was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team with a 3.6 grade point average. Before returning to St. Bonaventure, Brennan served as head coach of men's and women's swimming at Butler University for two seasons. Both his teams were ranked among the top 10 in the nation in team grade-point average. He also led both teams to their best Midwestern Collegiate Conference finishes ever and was named the 1999 MCC Coach of the Year. From 1995-97, Brennan was assistant coach at Ashland (Ohio) University, where he earned a master's degree in education. At Ashland, Brennan coached one male swimmer to a NCAA Division II national title in the 200 fly as well as a female swimmer to numerous Division II national sprint titles and national records. At St. Bonaventure from 1991-94, Brennan distinguishing himself as one of the top freestylers in school history. Over his career, he won eight individual Atlantic 10 Conference titles, set five A-10 records and was a two-time Senior Nationals qualifier.
