Thompson named Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week
April 14, 2008
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Thanks to a dominating display in the circle over the past seven days, sophomore ace Sherri Thompson has been named the Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week after guiding the Bonnies to four straight wins in conference play. Thompson was on the mound for all four of the club's wins this past weekend as the Brown and White recorded back-to-back series sweeps at La Salle and Fordham. She posted a 4-1 overall mark during the week with her only loss coming in an eight inning affair at Cornell. Thompson surrendered a mere 13 hits during the four-game Bona winning streak with 24 strikeouts, including a one-hit gem at La Salle on April 11th and a two-hitter against Fordham two days later. Following her lone defeat of the week, Thompson tossed three straight complete game shutouts to push her career shutout total to eight for a second place ranking in the all-time Bona record books. The Ulysses, Pa. product owns a 10-6 overall mark in the 2008 campaign with seven of her victories coming in A-10 action. Thompson has been nearly unhittable in league play as she boasts a 0.69 earned run average with 45 strikeouts in 61 innings of work. In the midst of just her second season on the mound for the Brown and White, Thompson ranks among the top 10 in every St. Bonaventure pitching category. Heading into this week's eight-game slate, she sits first in earned run average (1.41), fourth in wins (17) and strikeouts (193), sixth in complete games (31) and innings pitched (230.5) and seventh in appearances (37) and starts (32). The righty also needs an additional eight victories and one shutout to match the program's all-time single-season records of 18 wins and five shutouts, respectively. This is the first A-10 Pitcher of the Week honor for Thompson after being selected to the All-Rookie team following her first season with the Bonnies. After 26 games away from home, the Brown and White will make their McGraw-Jennings debut with a doubleheader against Big 4 rival Buffalo. First pitch of the two-game set is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
