March 21, 2008
Final Stats - Game One
EAST NORRINTON, Pa. - After waiting a day to take the diamond against the Hawks, the St. Bonaventure softball team recorded a split in its Atlantic 10 opening action with Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at East Norrinton Field. The Brown and White started their 2008 A-10 slate with a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Saint Joseph's as the visiting Bonnies needed 10 innings to move in position for the win before the Hawks responded in game two with a 4-0 shutout victory. Following today's split, St. Bonaventure moves to 6-10 (1-1) on the season with five wins in its last eight contests. With the score knotted at 2-2 heading into the top of the tenth inning, senior Brianna Bricker smacked her third home run of the year to clinch victory for the Bonnies in this afternoon's first contest. The Hawks left two runners on base in their attempt to tie or take the lead, but sophomore pitcher Sherri Thompson struck out two batters in the bottom half of the tenth to seal the win. After a scoreless first frame, the Brown and White tallied a run in each of the next two innings to take an early 2-0 advantage into the bottom of the third. In her Atlantic 10 debut, freshman Kara Morenus sparked the scoring with her first career yard ball that sailed over the centerfield wall to put the Bonnies in front by the score of 1-0. St. Bonaventure added another tally in its next at-bat as junior Ashley Kotz strolled to the plate following a Hawk's throwing error in their attempt to throw out Bricker on the base paths. The Hawks tied the game in the fourth with two runs thanks to a pair of RBI singles off Thompson to even the contest at 2-2. Both clubs failed to cross the plate in the next five innings until Bricker's homer in the top of the tenth.
Morenus led three Bona multi-hit batters with a career-best four knocks, including her second double of the year. Bricker added three hits followed by two from Ashley Kotz. The Bonnies finished with 11 in the first game. Thompson went the full distance on the mound, allowing just seven hits while striking out 11 in 10 innings of work. The second year ace also evened her mark to 4-4 in the circle this season with the win. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bona bats failed to generate any run support for freshman Sarah Signore and were shutout for the third time this season in a 4-0 loss. Saint Joseph's capitalized on four Brown and White errors en route to all four of its scores. The Hawks lit up the scoreboard in their first opportunity at the dish when Dana Bienieck reached the plate following a throwing error from shortstop Stephanie Narde. Saint Joseph's added one more run in the fourth and a pair in the sixth to build a four run cushion before the Bonnies last opportunity at the plate. St. Bonaventure managed just five hits in game two as Morenus led the Bonnies for the second straight game with a pair of base knocks. The Brown and White left two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning as Morenus and senior Kirstin Strong reached on a pair of singles to the left side. However, the next two Bona batters were retired to end the game. Despite allowing no earned runs while allowing just five hits on the day, Signore dropped her third game of the season to fall to 1-3 in her first season in the circle. The Brown and White will remain on the road as the club makes the short trip to Temple for a doubleheader with the Owls on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon. |
