Bonnies notch doubleheader sweep in Florida
Feb. 29, 2008
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Behind the arms of sophomore Sherri Thompson and freshman Sarah Signore along with timely hitting from the Bonnie bats, the St. Bonaventure softball team tallied consecutive wins for the first time this season at the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Break Invitational #2 on Friday afternoon. Thompson fanned 13 batters in the opener en route to a 2-1 extra inning victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) before handing the ball over to Signore for the final three frames of game two as the Bonnies prevailed 4-3 in eight over Mount St. Mary's for the sweep. The Bonnies improved to 4-8 on the season thanks to wins in three of their last four contests. Despite a dominant effort from their ace, the Brown and White struggled at the plate throughout the club's first action of the day to the tune of nine strikeouts, while Thompson allowed only three Red Flash hits on the afternoon. The reigning Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team selection pitched the Bonnies to their first three wins of the season. Trailing 1-0 heading into the sixth, junior Ashley Kotz led off the penultimate frame with a double to put herself into scoring position. Kotz quickly advanced to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt from senior Andrea Swanger before being brought to the plate on freshman Shelly Seeger's RBI slap single. With the score still knotted at 1-1 after seven innings of play, the Bonnies were forced to work into the eighth to pick up the win. Freshman Amber Webb-Fife was summoned from the bench to pinch run for senior Patricia McKeon and immediately moved into scoring position following a sacrifice from Ashley Kotz. Swanger sealed the contest with a sacrifice fly into left center as Webb-Fife crossed the plate to clinch the club's first victory of the day.
Thompson remained on the mound in game two as the Mount quickly filled out the book with a run in the first following a RBI triple. Sophomore Stephanie Narde responded in the top of the second with a two-out double before being sent home following freshman Maureen Wells' first extra base hit of the season to tie the game at 1-1. After another Mount St. Mary's run in the fourth, the Bonnies put together a two-run fifth frame to race in front by the score of 3-2. The scoring surge was sparked by a pair of errors in the field allowing Swanger and junior Kathryn Pazda to reach base. Senior Brianna Bricker pursued with a single prior to fellow classmate Kirstin Strong's two RBI single to push Bona past Mount St. Mary's by one run. However, the Mount would equal the count in the bottom half of the inning at 3-3 sending the Brown and White into extra time for the second straight game. The Bonnies clinched the win in the top of the eighth as Strong scored from second after a collision at first between Morenus and the fielder covering the base. Thompson worked the first five frames of game two, allowing four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Signore closed the deal with three scoreless innings en route to her first career victory. St. Bonaventure returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for the final day of the second edition of the FGCU Spring Break Invitational. The Bonnies begin with Mercer at 2:00 p.m. before finishing with Florida Gulf Coast at 8:00 p.m. |
