Rollin' with the Bonnies

Sept. 27, 2007

At about three o'clock the team gathered in front of the Reilly Center to get ready to go to Canisius. Our pre-game meals were ready for us to eat before we got on the bus. We had a choice of pasta (spaghetti or rigatoni) and salad from Angee's (our local Italian Restaurant and a proud sponsor of St. Bonaventure Athletics). Then we all piled into the two vans and were on our way to Canisius in Buffalo, NY. The bumpy ride lasted approximately an hour and a half and we got there in no time.

Prior to the game, the team hung out in a locker room and listened to Spanish reggae while Jamie persisted that "Harriet Winslow" was an old Nickelodeon TV show. After some laughs, and pre-game treatments, taping and some mental preparation, it was time for the game.

We met in the locker-room and Coach Khettry gave us a scouting report on Canisius and told us about the rivalry of the "Little 3": St. Bonaventure, Canisius and Niagara. We then went into the gym and worked on some team shape walkthroughs and some of our set-pieces and got onto the field a little earlier since Canisius plays on old fashioned-astro turf - not field turf!

Considering the field conditions, we came out hard and ready to fight. After getting use to the speed of the astro turf, we slowed down the game and created some good chances and finally Courtney scored on an assist from Anna and we ended the first half with a 1-0 lead. The second half went back and forth. They scored to tie the game, but then Marilyn scored to put us into the lead again, but then they scored again to tie it at 2. After we hit the post a couple of times, we thought for sure a third goal was going to come, but Canisius found the back of the net first and we ran out of time. We were all very disappointed - we had the lead twice on the road and we let it slip away. Coach Khettry was disappointed, especially since we felt like we should have won. This is the third game we've lost where we had a lead. We have to just learn to close games out and take advantage of scoring opportunities that we get.

After the game we all visited with our families and friends and showered. Then Pam Stottele's family provided the team with our choice of subs, fresh fruit, and drinks before we headed home. We quickly ate the delicious food and were on our way home back to Bonas and already thinking about our Sunday game vs. our other "Little 3" opponent: Niagara.
