Women's soccer captures Houghton Indoor Tournament
April 7, 2008
HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure Women's Soccer Team dominated the Houghton Indoor Tournament this past Saturday winning all four games while scoring 12 goals and allowing just two. The Bonnies' four wins came in the tournament's 5v5 style format and featured 22-minute contests. In the opening game, St. Bonaventure dominated from start to finish and defeated the Houghton I team, 6-1, led by Anna Cunningham's hat-trick. Courtney Bosse, Jamie Dentino and Marilyn Wargo each scored one goal in the win. In the second game, St. Bonaventure came from behind to beat a stingy Houghton College Alumni team, 2-1, on goals by Cunningham and Bosse. The win clinched the group for the Bonnies, allowing them a bye into the semifinals against Binghamton. "It was nice to play Binghamton again and I know the players were excited about erasing their previous defeat earlier in the spring," said head coach Manoj Khettry. "Once again, our defense was excellent and we created numerous chances, but winning 2-0 was still a positive result." In the finals, the Bonnies defeated the Houghton II team, which won last year's tournament with a 3-2 victory, ironically, over the Brown and White. This year proved to be different story as Houghton had no answer for Bosse, who tallied the game's only two goals. Head Coach Manoj Khettry was excited about the day: "It was another positive day for us this spring. We defended as hard as we did against Colgate - to allow only two goals through the course of 4 indoor games is amazing. Courtney and Anna seem to have found their grooves, with each scoring 5 goals on the day, but to be honest, everyone played really well and I was so impressed with our professional demeanor in preparation for each game and the intensity with which we defended and played for one another. I am so proud of what this team is accomplishing right now - I hope we continue to get better and play as well in our final two weekends."
The Bonnies continue their spring campaign this Saturday, April 12, with three games against Big 4 rivals Buffalo, Canisius and Niagara. The games will be played at the traditional 11v11 format on the campus of UB. St. Bonaventure will conclude its spring season the following weekend on April 20 at 1 p.m. against Youngstown State at Aquinas High School. Following the game, there will be a Women's Soccer Alumni gathering at Aquinas.
