Men's Tennis opens spring season with win over defending A-10 champ Charlotte

Jan. 27, 2008

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Scheduled to play three 2007 NCAA Tournament participants over the two-day Larsen Bowker Shootout hosted by Virginia Tech, the St. Bonaventure men's tennis team defeated defending Atlantic 10 Champion Charlotte 4-3 on the opening day at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

After dropping the doubles point, the Bonnies took four of the six singles matches to come away with the win in their spring opener.

"I thought we played pretty well in doubles despite losing the point," said head coach Mike Bates. "We came out with the same intensity in singles play and this time it worked out in our favor."

The No. 1 doubles team of juniors Jonathan Luce and Victor Lecina defeated Charlotte's Felix Bernhoerster and Brad Clinard, 9-8, for lone win. The 49ers snagged the doubles point with a close 9-8 win in No. 3 doubles.

"All of the doubles matches were close and usually losses like that are tough to recover from," Bates stated. "The guys did a nice job of bouncing back and didn't get caught up in it."

Junior Leo Mochizuki set the tone at the top as he took down Bernhoerster in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Luce picked up the Bonnies second point at No. 2 singles with a 7-6, 6-2, win over Clinard. Now in their second semester of collegiate tennis, freshman Chris Post and Mikhail Sudakov collected the other match-clinching points at No. 4 and No. 6 singles Post defeated Moritz Bernhoerster, 7-5, 6-4, while Sudakov won in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-1.

St. Bonaventure will return to Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Saturday for a pair of matches, starting with a morning tilt against host and nationally-ranked Virginia Tech. The Bonnies will then conclude their stay with an afternoon match against University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).
