Barrera, McLean, McNeill to be inducted to Athletics Hall Of Fame
Jan. 17, 2008
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - On Saturday, January 26, Enrique Barrera, Don McLean and Shandue McNeill `97 will be inducted into the St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2008. Barrera was the first men's varsity soccer coach, McLean served as the play-by-play announcer for men's basketball for 43 years and McNeill was a four-year starter at point guard for the men's basketball team. "Each of these guys has a special place in our school's athletic history, so it's only fitting that join this prestigious family," said Director of Athletics Steve Watson. "Their accomplishments are amazing, but it's their passion and dedication for St. Bonaventure that separates them from the rest of the pack." Barrera was the driving force behind the origin of Division I men's soccer at St. Bonaventure. He served as the program's head coach for 17 seasons from 1972-1988, while also teaching Modern Languages at SBU for 42 years. During his time as head coach, Barrera accumulated 103 wins, including a school record 12 victories in 1982, and routinely had his teams ranked among the best in New York State. McLean served as the "Voice of Bonnies Basketball" from 1956-89, working for WHDL and, later, WPIG Radio. McLean called 899 consecutive games during his career and described some of St. Bonaventure's most memorable games and seasons. McLean was apart of the NCAA teams of the 1960s, the 1970 Final Four team and the NIT Championship ball club in 1977. One of coach Jim Baron's first recruits, McNeill was the first in a long line of great point guards that played for the Brown and White since the early 90s. McNeill made an immediate impact in his first season with the Bonnies and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team. One year later, he helped lead St. Bonaventure to its first postseason appearance in 12 years, an NIT berth that resulted in a win over Southern Mississippi at the Reilly Center. The only player in program history to lead the team in assists four-straight seasons, McNeill broke career records for assists (616) and steals (281), while scoring 1,049 points. McNeil was named to the A-10 All-Defensive team as a senior and was a three-time Academic All-Conference selection.
Induction ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Hall of Fame room located in the Reilly Center. The induction is open to the public. |
