Golf captures title of Bucknell Invitational by one shot; Anderson is medalist
Sept. 17, 2005
LEWISBURG, Pa. - It is said that in the sport of golf, every shot counts. St. Bonaventure made that cliche an absolute truth on Saturday when it won the team title of the 17-team Bucknell Invitational by a single shot over the host Bison at the par-70 Bucknell Golf Club. The Bonnies shot a final round of 286 to hold of a late Bucknell rally. "It was a very exciting finish, to say the least," said Bonnies coach Steve Campbell. "We really had to sweat it out down the stretch. That's why we preach over and over that every shot is important. You just can't demonstrate that any more than how we did it this weekend. It's a great win for our program and I am really proud of the way the guys played all 54 holes." St. Bonaventure was consistent over the tournament's 54 holes. After the Bonnies shot a 284 (+3) in Friday's first round opening round -- the lowest four-man score in program history -- they followed it with rounds of 288 and 286 on Saturday for a total of 858. Lehigh finished third at 878 and Rider was fourth at 879. Senior Josh Anderson led the way for St. Bonaventure. His clutch, three-under par 67 in the closing round was the low round by any of the field's 86 players. Anderson opened with rounds of 70 and 72 and finished with a one-under total of 209. Sophomores Andy Whalen and Ryan Swanson each finished in tie for seventh place at 216 (+6). Whalen carded rounds of 70, 71 and 75 while Swanson shot 75, 69 and 72. Junior Ben Howe tied for 10th place with rounds of 71, 76 and 72 for a 219 total. Freshman Brennan Payne, playing in his first tournament, shot 73-82-75/230.
