ANNAPOLIS, Md. - St. Bonaventure is tied for fifth place out of 15 teams after Saturday's first round of the Navy Fall Golf Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.

The Bonnies shot a 299 and are tied with Saint Joseph's and Towson. George Mason and Siena are tied for the lead with a team score of 293.

Sophomore Andy Whalen led the Bonnies with an opening-day 72 (+1). He is tied for seventh place out of 81 golfers in the field.

Senior Josh Anderson shot 75 while sophomore Ryan Swanson and junior Ben Howe each carded a 76.

Bryan Bigley of Siena was medalist of the day with a 2-under-par 69.

"For the opening round of the season, it was solid," St. Bonaventure coach Steve Campbell said. "However, I think we could still be a bit better."

The Navy Invitational will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
