May 5, 2006
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - St. Bonaventure stands in fifth place after the first round of the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, which is being played on the Panther Lake course at Orange County National Golf Center. Led by a 69 from senior Josh Anderson and a 70 by sophomore Andy Whalen, the Bonnies shot a two-under par 286 in Friday's first round. Five teams in the field of 13 bettered par in the opening round. The Bonnies' team total of two-under par 286 was their best round of the spring season and has them two shots behind Richmond, four back of Charlotte and Rhode Island and nine behind tournament leader Xavier (277). St. Bonaventure is seven shots ahead of Saint Joseph's and eight better than George Washington. Anderson is one shot off the individual lead held by three players. Anderson birdied his final two holes to cap an up-and-down round. He had seven birdies on the day. Whalen is two shots back of the lead after a consistent round that saw him bogey just one hole. St. Bonaventure also had strong performances by its other three players. Freshman Brennan Payne shot one-over par 73 while sophomore Ryan Swanson shot 74 and junior Ben Howe shot 76. "It's an excellent start to what is going to be a very competitive tournament," said Bonnies coach Steve Campbell. "We got off to a good start today and then finished strong. We're looking forward to a very important second round." The 54-hole Championship continues on Saturday and Sunday. 2006 Atlantic 10 Golf Championship
