Whalen keeps Bonnies within striking distance at First Market Bank Intercollegiate
March 17, 2008
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - It's safe to say senior Andy Whalen isn't going to let any round in the final stretch of his career go to waste. The Conklin, N.Y. native fired a three-under par 68 in his first round of the spring season to help position the St. Bonaventure golf team in eighth place of the First Market Bank Intercollegiate at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort on Monday. Whalen posted a four-under par 32 on the front nine and a 36 on the back to finish in a tie with Mark Sommerfeld from Detroit for the low round of the day. Whalen led the field with six birdies and finished the course's par 4's at three-under. He also limited his putting to just 29 strokes and hit a stellar 14 fairways. Francis Marion University leads the 19-team, 104-player tournament that is being hosted by William and Mary with a four-man score of 286. St. Bonaventure sits 13 strokes back at 299 entering tomorrow's final round. Detroit Mercy (290), Gardner-Webb (292), James Madison (292) and Florida Gulf Coast (293) are separated by just three strokes for second through fifth place. Junior Brennan Payne's one-over par 72 was highlighted by a three-under par 33 on the back nine. Payne back nine push and four birdies helped move him into a six-way tie for 10th place. Sophomore Nathan Peck's 79 and senior Ryan Swanson's 80 accounted for the team's other two scores. St. Bonaventure will begin to tee-off on Tuesday at 9:20 a.m. The Bonnies will finish their final round alongside Florida Gulf Coast, Liberty and Atlantic 10 member Richmond.
