A veteran coach and player and a talented, devoted administrator is what St. Bonaventure University and its golf team have in Steve Campbell.

The 2006-07 season is Campbell's 14th year as the head coach of the St. Bonaventure golf team and his 19th at the University. Improvement has been the trademark of Campbell's tenure as coach.

The 2005-06 campaign was certainly one of the most successful in the golf program's history. Campbell led the Bonnies to three tournament titles, two runner-up finishes and a very respectable sixth place showing at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Those performances vaulted the Bonnies to their best-ever rankings in the Golf Coaches Association of America's Mid-Atlantic Region, 14th out of 49 teams.

In 2004-05, Campbell guided a young team to four runner-up finishes and one third place finish. Also during this season, the Bonnies made a major move upward in the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, jumping 17 spots up to No. 18.

In the 2002-03 season, Campbell led the Bonnies to four titles and two second place finishes. He was named co-winner of the conference Coach of the Year award in 2002 after leading the Bonnies to a fourth place showing at the 2002 Atlantic 10 Conference championship, which was St. Bonaventure's best showing at an 11-team A-10 tournament.

All told, the Bonnies have captured 20 invitational championships under Campbell, including 10 over the past five seasons.

Each fall, Campbell directs the Leo E. Keenan Invitational at Olean's Bartlett Country Club, an intercollegiate tournament recognized as one of the best in the region.

A native of Olean, N.Y., Campbell came to St. Bonaventure in 1988 as the fitness center manager and added duties of assistant golf coach in 1989.

Campbell was appointed assistant director of athletics for facilities and internal operations in 1994, and promoted to associate AD in the spring of 1999. He oversees all event management and operations for St. Bonaventure's athletics facilities, including the Reilly Center, McGraw-Jennings Field and campus golf course. He also supervises six intercollegiate teams as well as the sports medicine staff and the strength and conditioning program, conducts scheduling and helps plan and run special events.

Campbell graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1987. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports management and led the Slippery Rock golf squad as captain his senior year.

Steve and his wife, Chris, have a son, Sean, who was born on Feb. 5, 2002.
