Steve Bernath was named the director of basketball operations in August.

Bernath brings over 15 years of coaching experience to the Bona staff, including the last eight as a head coach in the junior college ranks. Over those eight seasons, he helped 40 student-athletes reach the four-year level, including 16 that made the leap to Division I. Among those 40 players, 11 earned first team All-Conference accolades, eight went on to play professionally and four earned All-American status.

Bernath spent the last five years as the head coach of Palm Beach Community College in Florida. While at the helm of PBCC, the Panthers posted a 96-64 record and claimed a pair of Southern Conference championships. Bernath guided Palm Beach to three 20-win seasons and in 2002 was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a regular season title in just his second season.

Prior to Palm Beach Community College, Bernath served as the head coach at Broome Community College in New York. There, BCC went 68-26 under his guidance, capturing a pair of Mid-State Conference Championships (1998, 2000). In each of his three seasons, the Hornets were ranked in the NJCAA national top 10 poll. Bernath was twice voted the Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year.

Bernath served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Siena College for three seasons under head coach Bob Beyer. Bernath helped recruit several of the members of Siena's 1999 MAAC Championship squad, including three-time All-MAAC selection Marcus Faison, who was named to the MAAC 25th Anniversary team.

Bernath's introduction to coaching came at his alma mater Binghamton under head coaching legend Dick Baldwin. During his three seasons there, the Bobcats won three straight SUNYAC titles and posted a record of 68-23. Bernath helped bring in 2004 Binghamton Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee Sherwin Telford, who finished as the program's second all-time leading scorer.

Spent the last year as an Northeast Regional NBA talent scout. Based out of Philadelphia, Pa., Bernath evaluated and ranked NCAA prospects for the annual NBA Draft. Bernath holds both a master's degree (1993) and bachelor's degree (1991) from Binghamton University.
