Final Stats

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The St. Bonaventure baseball team used a five-run eighth inning to surge past the Mountaineers en route to a 13-7 victory over Big East affiliate West Virginia on Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field.

The Bonnies snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and improved to 6-4 in the 2007-08 campaign, while West Virginia dropped to 8-4.

After seeing their lead cut to a single run at 7-6 following two Mountaineer runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Brown and White exploded for five runs in their next at-bat to clinch victory. Following an early run from junior Kevin Suminski to start the inning, fellow classmate Brandon Salerno laced a two RBI double down the leftfield line to bring home senior Randy Moley and junior Anthony Randich to push the Bonnie advantage to 10-6.

Salerno was quickly sent home via a Ricky Pillitteri single to center before the Bonnies concluded the scoring as junior Tristan Mulcahy reached on an error at third base allowing sophomore Kyle Gorby to race home and double up West Virginia to the tune of a 12-6 count.

Junior Matt Stewart picked up his first win of the season after tossing 3 1/3 innings in relief of Jim Britton. Stewart conceded just three hits following his entrance and fanned one batter.

Moley continued his torrid start to his final season in the Brown and White by adding three hits and three RBI against the Mountaineers, including a two-run home run in the first inning. Suminski also reached base three times as he combined with Moley for six of the Bonnies' 14 hits. Salerno knocked in three RBI, while freshman Jesse Bosnik clubbed in a pair.

Britton started on the mound for St. Bonaventure and allowed four hits and three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work, while striking out four Mountaineer batters.

The Bonnies will return to action tomorrow afternoon for game two of the weekday series against the Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
