Academic Support for Student-Athletes

St. Bonaventure University is proud of its reputation for providing society with quality practitioners, many of whom are former student-athletes.

St. Bonaventure's Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services, David Potter, and student-athlete Academic Coordinator Cindy DeVries assist the players with class schedules, tutoring and exploring future opportunities.

The mission of the student-athlete support area is:

1. To provide the most conducive environment possible for student-athletes to achieve success.

2. To recognize individual differences in learning and ability and to provide individualized support based on these differences.

3. To recognize the need for group interaction and promote group support based on this need.

4. To have a lifelong commitment to learning, and to strive to help the student-athletes reach this commitment.

5. To foster self-reliance and independent thinking.

Potter and DeVries are responsible for addressing the specialized needs of Bona's student-athletes. They provide fundamental information on study skills, time management and campus life. They are available for individual meetings with student-athletes and also maintain a high degree of personal contact with coaches and professors.

The Gus Galasso Academic Support Center

The Gus Galasso Academic Support Center was dedicated on Aug. 30, 1996. Located on the lower level of the Reilly Center, it houses a study lounge and computer center. The lounge is furnished with group meeting tables and chairs to accommodate study halls as well as individual studying. There is also a library of reference material.

Also available to student-athletes are the Teaching and Learning Center, the Counseling Center and Career Services. The Teaching and Learning Center provides and promotes both creative and dynamic instruction. The Center teaches dedicated, critical and active learning. It provides assistance that encourages academic accountability whereby students can accept responsibility for their academic excellence. Both peer tutoring and group assistance are available.

The Counseling and Career Development centers maintain a full range of services for students with personal, social, emotional or academic concerns. Individual sessions are available with either two full-time counselors or the Master's program interns. Opportunities for peer education and group counseling are just a few of the services offered to students.

Career Services provides a sophisticated career development program that can assist students in choosing a major or a career. Students can explore the job-hunting and graduate school processes and may register in an employment matching system that is also available to alumni. Career Services can help in the preparation of a resume', conduct a mock interview or even arrange an on-campus interview. Incorporating early planning, skill development, individual search strategies, and alumni contacts has helped many student-athletes gain a competitive edge in seeking employment after graduation.

Constant communication between the athletic academic support division and its constituencies, a 17:1 student/faculty ratio and an atmosphere conducive to learning allow St. Bonaventure to forge a comprehensive, yet highly personalized relationship with its student-athletes.
