INTRODUCTION
St. Bonaventure University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is concerned with the health and well being of its student-athletes. For this reason the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has made provisions to assure that the medical needs of each student-athlete are taken care of. The Athletic Training Staff are committed to providing the student-athletes with the highest quality injury prevention, rehabilitation and overall health care possible. This division of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is administered through the office of the Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Operations.
SPORTS MEDICINE DEPARTMENT HOURS

SPORTS MEDICINE DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES
The Sports Medicine Department is a Medical facility located in the Reilly Center, and should be treated as such. Appropriate conduct is expected at all times. The Full-time Certified Athletic Trainers along with the student athletic trainers are available for the health and safety needs of the student-athletes. In order for student-athletes to receive full medical benefits from the medical personal, treatments facility, and the University's Athletic Accident Insurance policy, certain procedures must be followed at all times.
- All Doctors appointments must be made through the supervising Certified Athletic Trainer for the respective sport. The student-athlete will be responsible for all medical costs if proper authorization is not obtained. If the injury requires treatment from the Emergency Room and a Certified Athletic Trainer cannot be reached, please report the visit ASAP.
- All injuries must be reported on the day they occur.
- Appropriate conduct is expected in the training room at all times. Horseplay, loitering, profanity, or eating in the training room will not be tolerated.
- If a Doctor's appointment or treatment time is missed, the student-athlete may not be allowed to practice.
- Student-athletes that sustain non-athletic injuries during non-NCAA sanctioned, unsupervised, unscheduled activities during the Traditional or Non-Traditional seasons may be referred to Health Services. Every effort will be made for medical care to be provided in the athletic training room keeping that the responsibility for incurred medical expenses is solely the student-athletes, responsibility and is not covered by the Athletic Accident Insurance.
PHYSCIAN APPOINTMENTS
All Physician appointments regarding orthopedic and sport related injuries shall be scheduled through the supervising Certified Athletic Trainer responsible for that Sport. All illness shall be arranged through the St. Bonaventure University Infirmary. If a student-athlete schedules any appointments on their own they become financially responsible for all costs.
SECOND OPINION
The Head Athletic Trainer should authorize second opinions if costs are to be covered by the University.
RELEASE OF MEDICAL INFORMATION
All student-athletes shall sign an authorization/consent for disclosure of medical information. This is protected health care information that may be released to certain individuals outlined in the consent form. All information regarding an athletic injury shall be authorized through the Athletic Training Staff, including statements to the media.
EQUIPMENT ISSUED
Equipment/medical supplies given to the student-athlete by the Athletic Training Staff under the recommendation by the team physician is property of St. Bonaventure University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. At the end of the athletic season/conclusion of treatment unless otherwise notified, the equipment /medical supplies should be returned in working condition to the Athletic Training Staff. Knee sleeves/ankle braces will be judged on an individual basis. Items recovered or returned with damages are subject to appropriate costs.
If the equipment/medical supplies are not returned within 14 days of completion of use a bill will be sent to the student-athlete from the Sr. Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. A hold will be placed on registration or transcripts until the bill is paid.

Head Athletic Trainer;
Asst. Athletic Trainers;
Internist;
Orthopedic Surgeons;
Podiatrist;
Physiatrists; and
Physical Therapist.
STUDENT-ATHLETE PHYSICALS
A student-athlete entering St. Bonaventure University must complete a physical and record all medical information as required by Health Services as part of their acceptance to the University. An Athletic Physical is required by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in order to participate in Intercollegiate Athletics. The Athletic Physical will be completed upon arrival on campus by the University's Team Physician. This is the only athletic physical that will be accepted. The Athletic Training Staff will schedule this exam.
All returning student-athletes should complete a medical history to identify an injury/illness that occurred during the off-season/ summer.
Students attempting to "walk on" during open tryouts should have passed the University entrance physical examination/medical history prior to the tryout. If a student is selected for a team, that student-athlete shall pass the athletic physical prior to further competition. No student-athlete will be permitted to participate in Intercollegiate Athletics until they have completed the University physical, athletic physical, and have been cleared by both.
MEDICAL HARDSHIP WAIVER
The Athletic Training Staff, in conjunction with the Sr. Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, administer the medical hardship program. The Team Physician will be consulted to determine the medical qualification for the appeal. The Team Physician decisions regarding the medical aspects of the appeal are final.
The Athletic Training Staff in conjunction with the Sr. Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, will prepare the necessary documentations and paperwork, and submit the Hardship Waiver Application to the Atlantic 10 Conference for consideration. The Sr. Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics will maintain a file on all applications and serve as the University's liaison with the Atlantic 10 Conference.
